Sunnyside Shootout was a 10 day game project produced for the Gamedev.tv Game Jam in collaboration with 2 other artists and programmers. For this project, I contributed 3D environment art, lighting & post-processing, UI, the script & descriptions, & custom shaders. Seeing as we had limited time for the game jam, I wanted to design a unique art style in which the world was made of clay, which went along well with the humorous tone set by the egg-themed characters and silly story. I created a simple tri-planar shader which could be applied to any object in the game and recolored accordingly. This allowed me to focus on the modeling of objects and buildings, and less so on painting unique textures for everything. I tried to keep the clay world idea in mind as I created the foliage and western buildings. Items in the game are destructible, so models were built as seperate components accordingly.
The game consists of 3 main segments. The town/saloon segment and the horse chase scene are the first two, and share a lot of the same assets. The third segment is a train car/train station sequence, which involved new models for the car interiors and stations. The architecture was kept simplified as to not obstruct the gameplay visuals, while still suiting the overall art direction.
Below are images from development as I experimented with the visuals and scene layouts.
In addition to the 3D artwork, I also wrote descriptions and a script for the game in order to give the player some reasoning and motivation for progressing through the levels and a satisfying narrative conclusion. The game’s names and abilities are all egg-themed, such as the main character “Over Easy” John and his horse Poach, which is also a reference to Roach (Geralt’s horse in the Witcher series!)
